5 Ways An Area Rug Can Spruce Up Your Living Space

by Dale Dauterive

1. Separate Rooms

Adding stylish area rugs to your indoor living space is a great way to define each room in your home and make your space appear bigger. If you have an open floor plan, your living room can feel more congested because each room flows into one another; however, adding a well-placed area rug allows you to separate the space from your living room to your dining room, and your dining room to your kitchen.

If your rug fits the size of your room--it will showcase each boundary and utilize the design elements in your home to create a well-designed interior aesthetic.

2. More Than a Rectangle

Most homeowners or interior designers are turned off from the idea of an area rug because they believe they are only sold in a less-than-pleasing rectangular form. While a rectangle-shaped rug is actually the most popular and fits the best in most home layouts, there are other options to choose from.

If you have the furniture and design structure for an area rug, think about what shape will blend the best. You want it to be a cohesive accessory that won’t throw off the look of your furniture.

Take a good look at how your furniture is arranged in your home and how you can incorporate an area rug design scheme. It can be simply switching to an oval or circular rug to better match the structure and layout of your home.

3. Cover Empty Wall Space

If you have a blank wall in your home that you can’t figure out what to do with, using a rug to cover that space is a unique and bold design element.

Wallpaper is expensive and outdated, and a tapestry can cause your home to look generic and tacky, so hanging an area rug on your wall can give your space the splash of color and a touch of creativity that it desperately needs.

Area rugs come in many shapes, patterns, textures, and colors that can turn a blank wall into a conversation-starter. Be aware of the material that you choose--if you go too heavy, it can take up too much space and clash with the consistency of the rest of your home’s design.

4. Layers of Rugs

There is no rule on how many area rugs you can incorporate in one room. Sometimes combining multiple rugs at once can create an exciting and layered design element.

When deciding to layer area rugs, the color and size of each rug play a huge part in how the vision will translate. If you choose rugs that are too large to fit together, the room will feel too small and the rugs will feel out of place next to your flooring. Equally, try to avoid layering too many smaller rugs together as it’s easy for the design to appear too busy and over-saturated.

Find a color scheme you like and create a nice balance of muted and brightly-colored area rugs to match the overall design of your home.

5. Enhance Color and Design

If the colors in your home feel stale, an area rug is one way to give your home a nice pop of color without completely updating the interior design.

It adds depth and additional hues to any room in your home without overwhelming your living space. Similarly, upgrading outdated area rugs to coincide with design trends and hues can give your home a modern touch minus the vast cost of renovation.
